Each month Vanguard Benefits features a select wellness category that aligns with our priorities for improving overall health awareness. This July we have chosen to focus our information and education on Zero HIV Stigma Day on July 21st and World Hepatitis Day on July 28th.
As an employee benefits company, we are focused on providing education and awareness whenever possible. HIV (human immunodeficiency virus) is a virus that attacks the body’s immune system. If HIV is not treated, it can lead to AIDS (acquired immunodeficiency syndrome). Zero HIV Stigma Day is celebrated to raise awareness about HIV stigma and to educate people on the ways in which it can be eradicated. #ZeroHIVStigmaDay
July 28th is World Hepatitis Day. Hepatitis is an inflammation of the liver which is a cause of numerous health problems, most dangerous being liver cancer. World Hepatitis Day (WHD) is observed on 28 July to raise awareness against the global problem of viral hepatitis and to bring change in this situation. People from all over the world are urged to come together and take action towards elimination of this disease.
Stigma is harmful and prevents some people from seeking care.
Four Ways to Reduce Stigma
- Talk About It
- Be understanding and supportiv
- Educate yourself and others
- Take the next step to intentionally overcome bias – ask a medical professional
Throughout the month of July look for useful information, carrier tips, CDC insight and a podcast dedicated to the same important subject of removing stigma.
